BIG BAND, PRICE £30
Artist: Steely Dan
A note-for-note transcription of this classic Steely Dan track from the album Aja. This version is arranged as a big band instrumental and is based on the original chart by legendary LA session player Tom Scott. It features tenor saxophone, playing both the melody in the first half of the first verse and the improvised solos in the middle section and towards the end of the chart. Trombones also feature in the second half of each verse, and solo trumpet takes the melody in the first half of the second verse. The chorus melody is played by the alto saxes backed by the trumpets. The chart is interesting harmonically, featuring typical Steely Dan chromatic chord changes (Dmaj7 - Asus2/C# - Cmaj7 - Gsus2/B).
THE MOOD I'M IN (FROM PASSING STRANGERS) (KING / WEBSTER)
BIG BAND, PRICE £30
Artist: Tony Hadley
A note-for-note transcription of the first track on Tony Hadley's album Passing Strangers. The mood and sentiment of the lyrics hark back to an earlier era, but avoid the politically incorrect overtones of other songs from the same period such as 'Girl Talk'. A brisk jazz waltz, this chart features a great piano part which is a fully notated transcription of what is played on the album track. The trombones supply the rhythmic thrust of the arrangement by playing syncopated chords against the walking bass part. Saxes back up the harmony by playing a tastefully adapted psuedo-string backdrop at times, while the whole band is involved in the instrumental interlude in the middle section of the chart and the exciting ending. Colourful chord changes and an up-beat positive feel make this an interesting chart to perform for singer and band members alike. We were amused to see that one line of the lyrics reproduced in the CD booklet read, 'I like to rejoice' instead of 'I like to read Joyce'!
RECIPE FOR MAKING LOVE (FROM WE ARE IN LOVE) (HARRY CONNICK, JR.)
BIG BAND, PRICE £30
Artist: Harry Connick, Jr.
A note-for-note transcription of this classic Harry Connick Jr track from the album We Are In Love, arranged by the brilliant Marc Shaiman. The recorded version features clarinets in the introduction, but we have carefully adapted this for a standard saxophone section. The chart features a cheeky piano solo in C to begin with, which leads into a short instrumental section modulating cleverly into E-flat for the vocal to enter. Muted trumpets and trombones play off each other, joined later by the saxes, leading to a short Shearing-style guitar-piano interlude. After this, the whole band joins in with a rousing instrumental section leading to a modulation to E for the final verse and outro. We particularly like the ending of this arrangement which uses the following unusual chord progression: A#m7-5 / Am6 / C7/G / E/G# / C7/G / F#m7 / F9+11 / E6(9). Our favourite lyric lines are: 'I didn't get it from my grandma's book upon the shelf, I didn't get it from a magical and culinary elf'!
THEME FROM THE ODD COUPLE / GIRL TALK (NEAL HEFTI)
BIG BAND, PRICE £30
Artist: Neal Hefti
A medley for big band of two of the best-known pieces of music by composer/arranger Neal Hefti. The famous harpsichord figure begins the Theme from The Odd Couple at a brisk shuffle tempo and the saxes then play the tune, gradually joined by the trumpet section. The tempo then slows by almost half for a richly orchestrated ensemble version of 'Girl Talk', supported by high strings from the keyboards in the final verse. This chart is relatively easy to play, but uses all the authentic recorded harmonies and chord changes, as illustrated in the two score examples.
THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT (FROM THE VERY BEST OF JUDY GARLAND) (DIETZ / SCHWARTZ)
BIG BAND, PRICE £30
Artist: Judy Garland
A transcribed adaptation of Judy Garland's studio recording of this famous Arthur Schwartz tune from the feature film The Bandwagon. The orchestral arrangement has been tastefully adapted for big band and works really well with the saxes closely following the original string parts. After the initial AABA structure is sung, the entire band plays two verses and then the vocal re-enters singing the B section again. After a modulation up a semitone from the original key of F major, the final verse is sung followed by an outro that mirrors the intro in harmony but with a nice twist at the end.
SPINNING WHEEL (DAVID CLAYTON-THOMAS)
BIG BAND, PRICE £40
Artist: Shirley Bassey
A transcription for big band of the Shirley Bassey recording, originally a hit by Blood, Sweat and Tears in 1969. We have added a suitable intro and outro adapted from the BS&T version. The arrangement also features an improvised guitar solo instead of a repeat of the second verse, as on the original recording.
I TOLD YA I LOVE YA, NOW GET OUT! (LOU CARTER/HERB ELLIS/JOHN FRIGO)
BIG BAND, PRICE £40
Artist: Cybill Shepherd
Another note-for-note transcription of an arrangement performed by Cybill Shepherd in an episode of the American TV series Moonlighting. It is also included on the television soundtrack album of the show. A medium-tempo swing number, brilliantly arranged by Alf Clausen, it includes a clever two-bar section simulating the sound of an express train that follows the line, 'you can leave on the five eighteen'. It also features a background trumpet solo towards the end.
NOBODY DOES IT BETTER (MARVIN HAMLISCH/CAROLE BAYER SAGER)
BIG BAND, PRICE £40
Artist: Carly Simon
An adaptation for big band of this famous Bond theme sung by Carly Simon, with the string parts carefully arranged for the saxes. The brass parts follow the recorded arrangement very closely and the piano part is virtually a note-for-note transcription. A suitable ending has been added in place of the fadeout on the record. All the important guitar fills have been included on the guitar part, and the drum part is also a note-for-note transcription from the recording.
THIS CAN'T BE LOVE (RICHARD RODGERS/LORENZ HART)
BIG BAND, PRICE £40
Artist: Natalie Cole
A note-for-note transcription of another of Bill Holman's great charts recorded by Natalie Cole on the award-winning CD, Unforgettable.
BIG BAND, PRICE £40
Artist: Adele
An adaptation for big band of the theme from the new James Bond film Skyfall, sung by Adele. The arrangement stays faithful to the orchestral version on the record, with the backing vocal parts on trumpets for the choruses and saxes for the middle section. The only addition is a short Tenor Sax solo at the beginning to fill out the otherwise rather sparse piano introduction.
WHERE OR WHEN (RICHARD RODGERS/LORENZ HART)
BIG BAND, PRICE £40
Artist: Frank Sinatra
A note-for-note transcription of the Quincy Jones arrangement featured on the Sinatra At The Sands album. We used a studio recording of the arrangement (from the Duets album) to transcribe from, but the vocal part is an accurate representation of Sinatra's performance on the live album. This arrangement demonstrates Quincy Jones at the height of his powers as an arranger in the early sixties. It includes an exciting instrumental section and a rousing finale, ending on an E-flat 7+9+11 chord.
IT HAD BETTER BE TONIGHT (HENRY MANCINI/JOHNNY MERCER)
BIG BAND, PRICE £40
Artist: Michael Buble
A note-for-note transcription of Michael Buble's recording of this famous Henry Mancini number from the film The Pink Panther. Arranged by David Foster and Jerry Hey (of 'The Jerry Hey Horns' fame), this is a fast latin number and quite a challenging chart. It features a guitar and a piano solo and some Mariachi-style trumpet figures.
THEME FROM THUNDERBIRDS (BARRY GRAY)
BIG BAND, PRICE £40
Artist: Barry Gray
A transcription for big band of the famous Thunderbirds Theme, based on the original arrangement from the 1960s TV show. The '5-4-3-2-1' chords have been used as an intro and the Alto Sax solo is supported by the other saxes playing the string parts from the recording. The third repeat of the middle section uses different trombone chords from the first two, based on an orchestral arrangement of the tune, to add variety. The outro has been extended slightly with the chart ending on a triumphant A-flat 6(9) chord.
THE AVENGERS SUITE (JOHNNY DANKWORTH/LAURIE JOHNSON)
BIG BAND, PRICE £40
Artist: Johnny Dankworth / Laurie Johnson
A medley for big band of the Johnny Dankworth and Laurie Johnson themes from this famous 1960s/1970s TV show, with the string parts tastefully adapted for the saxophone section. Alto Sax 1 doubles on Flute for the Dankworth section, and Trumpet 1 plays a short solo rendition of 'Tara's Theme' in the Johnson section.
THE BEST IS YET TO COME (CY COLEMAN/CAROLYN LEIGH)
BIG BAND, PRICE £40
Artist: Frank Sinatra
Another note-for-note transcription of a classic Frank Sinatra track, originally featured on the album It Might As Well Be Swing. Once again, we used the studio recording of the arrangement from the Duets album to transcribe from, but the vocal part is an accurate representation of Sinatra's performance on the original track with the Count Basie orchestra.
TOMORROW'S WORLD THEME (JOHNNY DANKWORTH)
BIG BAND, PRICE £40
Artist: Johnny Dankworth
An arrangement for big band of the original Johnny Dankworth theme to this classic BBC science and technology show. Alto Sax 1 doubles on Flute for the main theme and for an extended solo in the middle section of the chart.
WE ARE IN LOVE (HARRY CONNICK, JR.)
BIG BAND, PRICE £40
Artist: Harry Connick, Jr.
Another transcription of a classic Harry Connick Jr track from the album We Are In Love, again arranged by Marc Shaiman. The string parts have been adapted and incorporated into the chart to produce an authentic and well-balanced arrangement that sounds just like the original recording. Featuring alternating swing and latin sections played at a brisk tempo of 190 bpm, this chart is both exciting and challenging to play.
WITCHCRAFT (CY COLEMAN/CAROLYN LEIGH)
BIG BAND, PRICE £40
Artist: Frank Sinatra
An authentic transcription of this classic Frank Sinatra track, with the string parts tastefully adapted for the saxes. Alto Sax 1 doubles on flute for a short solo in the outro.
MY HEART BELONGS TO DADDY (COLE PORTER)
BIG BAND, PRICE £40
Artist: Sophie Milman
An accurate transcription of this Sophie Milman track from her eponymous album, fleshed out a little for a standard 5444 big band. It features alternating rock and swing sections, and solos for Alto Sax 1, Trombone 1, Trumpet 1 and Baritone Sax.
A FOGGY DAY IN LONDON TOWN (GEORGE & IRA GERSHWIN)
BIG BAND, PRICE £40
Artist: Michael Buble
A note-for-note transcription of this Michael Buble track from the album It's Time, with the string parts tastefully adapted for the saxes. This is a typical 'hot' chart from the pen of Bill Holman and features a short tongue-in-cheek extract from 'Rule Britannia' at the end, played first by the band and then by the piano in musical-box style. The piano part accurately recreates all the fills and jazz chords played on the recording.
THAT OLD BLACK MAGIC (HAROLD ARLEN/JOHNNY MERCER)
BIG BAND, PRICE £40
Artist: Frank Sinatra
An authentic transcription of this classic Frank Sinatra track. The original recording, arranged by Billy May, features two trumpet sections often playing alternate figures; this has been successfully adapted for four trumpets. An E-flat major13#11 chord played quietly by the whole band has been added at the end as it was felt the recorded version needed an ending!
